"Doubt, A Parable" @ the Zach Scott Whisenhunt Theatre
Before 2005, John Patrick Shanley was known mostly for penning the Academy Award-winning screenplay of the 1987 film “Moonstruck,” which starred Cher, Nicolas Cage and Olympia Dukakis. Other Shanley screenwriting gems include the 1990 cult classic “Joe Versus the Volcano” (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan) and the critically acclaimed 2002 HBO film “Live From Bagdad” (Michael Keaton). However, it is the play that recently extended it’s run at the Zachary Scott Theatre Center’s Whisenhunt Stage that won Shanley the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and earned the playwright a Tony Award for Best Play. “Doubt: A Parable,” directed by Steven Dietz, follows Sister Aloysius, a veteran nun at a Bronx, N.Y., Catholic school, as she tracks suspected abuse among a parish clergyman, Father Flynn, and a student, Donald Muller. The suspenseful drama climaxes when Aloysius confronts Flynn and demands his confession and resignation.
